Historically, redwork quilts were made by individuals and by community groups like churches and unions. Catherine Heard is tapping into this tradition by asking friends and community to contribute embroideries to to Redwork: The Emperor of Atlantis.

Don’t worry if you don’t know how to embroider! During the Victorian era, making a redwork square was often a first embroidery project for a youngster because it is an achievable learning task for someone who is learning to sew.

You will receive an embroidery kit in the mail two to three weeks after you place your order. The kit includes fabric printed with your chosen pattern, embroidery thread, and a needle. For participants in Canada, we can also send you an embroidery hoop, if you need one.
