“This war has been affecting almost the entire western world, and I have the sense that most of the countries don't involve because political and economical reason, and left behind humanitarian aspects.”

“Thinking about the connections between humans and the natural world. ‘We are the plants!’ My initial reaction was thinking that the image was super cute, but then started thinking about community and childhood imaginiation and innocence and the 'groundness' of plants that we need to channel in hard times.”

“The wise owl, totem animal of the goddess Athena. The moon as symbol of the goddess Artemis and a significant symbol of Islam. Wisdom is an important aspect for collaboration.”

“I'm attracted to plants & flowers, and I choose the poppy because it symbolizes peace, sleep, & death. The flower is used medically & better known recreationally as opioid. Wars have been waged over control of the seeds. The flower also symbolizes peace, and it is better known as a worn symbol of peace & remembrance for Remembrance Day. Poppy seeds are used medically by Indigenous people. It's an interesting flower.”

“I'm from Alberta - left when I was 16, and was not aware of residential schools. I had, instead, a sense that there was a "history" but this was often glossed over by romantic notions of the settler culture embroidered in historical museum sites like Fort Edmonton. The name of this school "Sm School" for me, simplifies these illustrations of history.”

“I choose the picture and subject initially by instinct upon thinking about it I realize that I choose it because the subject makes me uncomfortable and I want to meditate on it rather than avoid it. I hope to bring my awareness to it so that I can look at what energy and action I need to bring to it, to understand my role in this piece of history.”

Laura Di Vilio

“I love the courage and ingenuity of his escape. I wanted something that felt hopeful after doing the image of the children in the residential schools.”

Laura Di Vilio

“I love the nostalgia of the piece there is something about it.”

“This image strikes a powerful memory and feeling in me. I remember the morning so well. A friend of mine called me just after the first plane hit and told me to turn on the TV right now it was just before 9am and as I was watching the TV in total shock not really registering what I was seeing the second plane hit it was a powerful moment that has had a lasting impact on me. New York is a second home to me I have family there and I have gone many times just to experience the art and energy of the city. My husband was born there. That moment made me realize that anything can happen at any time. I really never felt it that deeply before or since.”

Laura Di Villo

“(I choose this pattern) after having watched Ai WeiWei's film human flow I have been painfully aware of how much of humanity is without a home, unwelcome and abandoned in horrid conditions and how we need to embrace other humans and give them a place.”

Laura Di Villo

“It is amazing how we have made horrible things romantic and nostalgic covering up what the truth actually is about things like war.”

Laura Di Villo

“This image has a haunting quality for me.”

“The image reminds me of ongoing Violence against Women even in a supposedly safe situation eg the home or going about their business - like the slain women workers of Ciudad Juarez. In the latter situation, seeking justice, an avenger has arisen, called 'Diana, the Hunter'. The name derived after a prominent statue in Mexico city.”
