“This image was originally painted by my father and reminds me of the hummingbirds on our balcony in Mexico, as well as the Aztec legend that hummingbirds are reincarnations of brave warriors.”

“I like the irony of a traditional image that could go alongside the political images and still hold its own or look a bit subversive.”

“I choose the second plane flying into the second tower, as I remember the horror of that event. I was on the telephone with a well-known Toronto lawyer just after the news of the second plane hitting the Twin Towers was released. I was really shaken and said to him: "Did you hear what I just heard?" "Yes," he replied. "It's nothing. The media is over-reacting." "Nothing?" I said, "I believe our world will never be quiet the same." He tried to dismiss me, but I didn't care. I told him that I would call him back later. I hung up the phone and called my eldest daughter who had just started classes downtown at the University of Toronto. I told her what had happened and said to stay above ground (as I felt the subway might be a target, but didn't tell her that) and said that I was on my way to pick her up. I was concerned that downtown Toronto might be another target. I still remember the immense feeling of relief when I had her safely in the car and we drove home. That day had a profound effect on me.”

“I think embroidering this image will be graphically pleasing because I think the stripes are going to look pretty cool.”

“Out of all the images in the set of "War on Terror" this image stuck out as both messed up and comedical.”

“(This image) is provocative without being too difficult to spend time stitching.”

“The dove is a symbol of peace that indicates this healing and it connects to my life personally through the embroidery of sister and mother. I have a beautiful memory of my mother suddenly taking odd work breaks from the family business over 20 years ago. My sister finally admitted, in confidence, that Mom was getting help with a project a little beyond her skill level from Gitta who owned an embroidery shop a couple of doors down. Years later, when my first child turned one year old, the same sister presented an embroidery project of her own to my one year old daughter. Both time-consuming, anticipatory celebratory gifts contained images of birds which set me on the path to tackle my own act of community love via the image of a friendly fowl.”

“I chose the Hitler image because it connects to the early childhood experiences of my parents who suffered the effects of living in a part of Holland edged too close to the German border at the end of WWII. The seeds of inter-generational pain are sewn into the lives of human beings through many evils and this image represents one of those negative forces that require years of stitching to heal.”

“Innocent little ones. Are they also ME as a child, playing “cowboys & indians” - not thinking at all of the realities and not knowing.”
I found I could not embroider the “terror” pieces, massacres, etc. as this would make me think of the sadness/madness while concentrating … the images were real.”

“The flower represents renewal, growth, healing, love to me.”
